About
Monique Ryan
Dr Monique Ryan is the Independent federal Member for Kooyong, first elected in May 2022 and re-elected in 2025. Before entering parliament, she built a distinguished career as one of Australia's leading paediatric neurologists, completing her medical training in Melbourne, Sydney, and Boston, and going on to serve as Director of Neurology at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne from 2014. She has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and supervised numerous clinical trials in neurological disease, bringing a deep commitment to evidence and rigour into her public life.
Dr Ryan's 2022 campaign focused on climate change, federal integrity, and pandemic accountability, and helped reshape the political landscape in Australia's so-called teal wave. In parliament, she has continued to press for stronger climate action, robust anti-corruption measures, and reform of the health system. She introduced a private member's bill aimed at improving integrity in government, and led a high-profile campaign to reform the HECS student loan system. Her petition on indexation gathered more than 260,000 signatures, and the changes she proposed were adopted by the Albanese government in May 2024.
More recently, Dr Ryan has been a leading voice for a comprehensive ban on gambling advertising, championing the recommendations of the Murphy inquiry and pressing for legislation that prioritises public health over industry interests. She has also pushed for greater transparency at the National Anti-Corruption Commission, scrutinised defence procurement and AUKUS costs, and drawn on her clinical experience to advocate for stronger primary care and Medicare funding.
A persistent advocate for restoring trust in democratic institutions, Dr Ryan argues that good policy depends on transparency, expertise, and listening to communities rather than vested interests.
