About
Tiberio Caetano
Tiberio has spent more than 25 years working at the frontier of machine learning and artificial intelligence as a researcher, entrepreneur, and, for the past decade, an advocate for taking AI ethics and societal impact seriously. He is Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of Gradient Institute, Australia’s first independent non-profit dedicated to the ethics, safety, and governance of AI, where he leads research and advises governments, industry, and civil society on AI policy and practice.
Prior to Gradient Institute, he co-founded Ambiata, later acquired by Insurance Australia Group, where he built AI systems for automated decision-making across banking, insurance, telecommunications, media, and retail. Earlier in his career, he held research positions across three continents, published widely in leading journals and conferences, supervised numerous PhD students, and led machine learning research at Australia’s Data61 (formerly NICTA). He also holds an Honorary Professorship at Australian National University.
Shaped by a background in physics and more than a decade of secular dharma practice, Tiberio brings both scientific rigor and contemplative inquiry to his work. At the heart of his thinking is a guiding question that spans both his professional and personal life: what, ultimately, can we trust?
